2 Peter 1:19-2:1

Today we are reading 2 Peter 1.
As we read, these verses stood out to me:

2 Peter 1:19-2:1 - 19 And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. 2 But false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

Honest Questions

1. When Peter mentions the "prophetic word made more sure" what prophetic word or words do you think he is referring to?

2. Was the prophetic word something written only by the "prophets" of the Old Testament or is is something that is found in the writing of other Old Testament books as well?

3. When reading scripture how do we know if something that was written was "prophetic" or something that is to be strictly understood in its historical context?

4. When was the last time you read one of the prophetic books of the Bible? What did you read? What sticks out most in your memory when you think about that book/message?

5. What are some of the differences between prophetic words spoken before and after Pentecost?

6. Compare 2 Peter 1:19-20 and 1 Peter 1:10-11 with Matthew 16:13-20, Matthew 19:17 and Ephesians 4:20-21. Do you think these verses are all describing the same phenomenon spoken of by Jesus in John 10:11-18?

7. Read 1 Peter 1:20-21. There are not many things we are told are of "first importance" in the Bible but recognizing the divine authorship of Scripture is one of them. Why is this important? What could we do to shed more light on the value of Scripture? If we really believe that the Bible is the word from God would we modify our approach to reading it?

8. What are some of the most obvious differences between authentic prophetic words/prophets and the messages delivered by false prophets? How can we identify false prophets and how should we respond to them when we hear their message?

9. What is was your favorite verse in 2 Peter 1 and why?

10. Do you have any specific questions or prayer requests after reading 2 Peter 1?
