Today we are reading Romans 4.

As we read, these verses stood out to me:

Romans 4:1-5 - What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about; but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, the wages are not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

You can share anything that is on your heart but, if you don't know where to start, try reading these verses and answering one or more of the following "Honest Questions."

Honest Questions

1. When you think about Abraham and the promises God made to him, do you think of yourself as an heir to those same promises or do you think they were only made to him and his biological descendants?

2. When Abraham "believed God" in such a way that it resulted in righteousness, what exactly was he believing?

3. Is it possible for a person to live in such a way that they could actually "earn" their salvation?

4. When you think about the "credit" that has been extended into your "account" by grace, what sort of limitations do you see put on it? In other words, do you think it is possible that we could exceed the limits of Grace extended to us as follower's of Christ? Why or why not? What if we stop "believing" in God or "following" Christ?

5. Read Romans 4:5 and respond to what you see there.

6. Read Romans 4:7-8. Do you think of yourself as a person that these verses apply to? Why or why not?

7. Read Romans 4:11. Do you think of Abraham as being the "father of all those who believe without being circumcised?" What sort of significance does that phrase have for you? If faith justified Abraham prior to his circumcision, why would Abraham have himself, his children, or any one else circumcised?

8. Read Romans 4:20-25. Do you know where it was first written that righteousness was credited to Abraham because of his faith in God? Why do you think Paul considers this reality a truth that should benefit those of us who believe that Jesus was punished for our wrongdoings? What does the resurrection of Jesus have to do with our justification?

10. Do you have any specific questions or prayer requests after reading Romans 4?
